The People's Navy was from 1960 to 1990, the name for the naval forces of the GDR. It was part of the armed forces of the National People's Army founded in 1956 and distinguished, as in most modern armed forces their grade designations of those of the army and air forces.
In the formation of the National People's Army (NVA) was transferred on 1 March 1956 from the VP Lake, the "Administration Naval Forces of the NVA" with at that time already nearly 10,000 men in the new naval forces. By resolution of the National Defense Council of the GDR on 19 October 1960, the naval forces of the NVA on November 3, 1960 was awarded in a large fleet parade the name People's Navy.
